CPChem and Danimer Scientific collaborate to make biodegradable plastics

Oct 9, 2023

Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) is expanding its collaboration with Danimer Scientific, a US-based bioplastics company, to explore development and commercialization of high-volume biodegradable plastic products using Danimer’s Rinnovo polymers via CPChem’s loop slurry reactor process at CPChem’s Bartlesville facility in Oklahoma, the US.

CPChem and Danimer Scientific expand collaboration on developing biodegradable plastic products.

Rinnovo is a type of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) synthesized from lactones produced using Danimer’s proprietary Novo22 catalyst technology, which can be used in the production of biodegradable alternatives to traditional plastics.

The collaboration follows the previous agreement between the two companies in which Danimer is evaluating the use of CPChem’s loop slurry reactor design to develop a continuous reactor system in the manufacturing process for Rinnovo.

CPChem’s Bartlesville facility, opened in 1950, contains first-class research equipment which allow rapid testing of products across various processing conditions. In addition, the facility’s testing and analytical capabilities provide a more rapid feedback loop, accelerating the development and optimization of resin formulations.
