Covestro forms partnerships in China for advancing solutions for EVs

Nov 8, 2023

Covestro has established partnerships with Changzhou Talent-display Optronics & Technology (CTOT) and Chinese premium electric vehicle brand HiPhi to advance vehicle display technologies and low-carbon footprint material solutions respectively.

Developing specialized PC films with CTOT

Covestro and CTOT signed a strategic partnership during the 6th China International Import Expo (CIIE). The collaboration focuses on the enhanced application of specialized polycarbonate (PC) films to improve vehicle displays.

Covestro and CTOT sign a strategic partnership agreement to strengthen their collaboration and expand their joint efforts into high-end industrial control displays.

With the partnership, Covestro launched a high-quality PC light guide plate material, Makrofol LM807, for vehicle displays.

Made with optically graded materials and processed with precision, the PC films demonstrate outstanding optical and physical properties along with consistent quality. These features enable light guide plates to accommodate larger and thinner screens.

Human-vehicle interaction has growing importance in vehicle displays.

CTOT has placed an initial order of 20 tons of Makrofol LM807.

The latest strategic agreement will further consolidate the partnership between Covestro and CTOT and expand their joint efforts into high-end industrial control displays.

Joint laboratory with HiPhi on advanced material solutions

On the other hand, Covestro and HiPhi unveiled a joint laboratory at the CIIE to advance low-carbon footprint material solutions and smart technologies for future mobility.

Covestro’s high optical performance Makrolon AL solutions are used in the headlamp lenses for its dimensional stability, UV resistance and high transparency. In the LiDAR lenses, the Makrolon AX portfolio delivers outstanding infrared transmittance, shaping curved surfaces and impact resistance. They can also endure working environment at temperatures from 110-115°C.

As the long-term partner of HiPhi since 2018, Covestro has applied its material solutions to HiPhi’s flagship models, such as the PC solutions that enable a “smart” B-pillar equipped with complex functions in the all-electric SUV HiPhi X.

HiPhi Z, a smart sports sedan, employs PC grades for the touchpad switch on its steering wheel, as well as high performance waterborne polyurethane adhesives for auto interiors.
