Berry launches recyclable cling film for fresh food packaging

Dec 4, 2023

Berry Global launched a new version of Omni Xtra polyethylene cling film – Omni Xtra+, for fresh food applications, which provides a high-performance alternative to traditional polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cling films.

Improved mechanical properties

The new Omni Xtra+ has numerous features, including improved elasticity, uniform stretching behavior and improved impact resistance.

Its outstanding machinability and high elastic retention power provides strong sealing properties for tight pack and product fixation.

With Berry’s new advanced manufacturing process, the film offers superior clarity and strong anti-fog and condensation properties to provide high level of product visibility.

In addition, the film’s ease of handling allows high throughputs on automatic packing machinery.

Enhanced sustainability

Omni Xtra+ also offer sustainability benefits, including compliance with the anticipated requirements of the forthcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

It is also recyclable and aligns with current European recycling guidelines. The film has received certification of recyclability and compatibility from RecyClass and Interseroh, which are both leading industrial organizations that work to achieve plastics industry.

The new film range also enables production of a thinner overall film, with overall weight reduction of over 25% in density compared to PVC.

These features are all key part of Berry’s sustainability goals and BMore Together initiative and support the aims of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Global Commitment in which Berry is a signatory.

“Omni Xtra+ film enhanced performance and presentation provide customers with effective product protection and maximum on-shelf appeal while meeting consumer demands for more sustainable pack formats and helping companies achieve their own sustainability goals, particularly by avoiding hard to recycle PVC films,” stated Benjamin Hendriks, R&D Manager, Berry Global Flexible Films.
