Industry-first AI software optimizes powder coatings application
AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business and coatingAI partnered to develop an AI-based software to improve the application process and reduce carbon footprint.

AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business and coatingAI signed a strategic partnership on the AI-based software.
This industry-first technology – Flightpath, optimizes equipment settings such as gun motion, reduces defects and overspray to achieve more uniform, consistent coverage with fewer flaws. These improve powder consumption which helps reduce costs, avoid rework, and save time and energy.
The software has been in development for two years and an exclusivity agreement has just been signed by both parties.
Remco Maassen van den Brink, Marketing Director of AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business, stated that the partnership with coatingAI strengthened AkzoNobel’s technical service capabilities.
“Our solution, built on the power of artificial intelligence and AkzoNobel’s technical expertise, will not only increase efficiency for their customers, but also drive greater sustainability within the powder coatings industry,” added Marlon Boldrini, CEO of coatingAI.
In earlier 2023, AkzoNobel’s Powder Coatings business was the first in the industry to launch an openly accessible online energy savings calculator for powder coatings. It helps users understand how small changes in the coatings process can have big impact in terms of energy efficiency.
