A partnership project on converting CO2 into other chemical products

Sep 8, 2023

Braskem and University of São Paulo (USP) team up to research on converting CO2 into other chemical products.

The project aims to deploy technologies to reuse CO2 in order to obtain chemical products, such as olefins and alcohols. Thus, slowing down emissions into the environment and using it as a raw material for the production of polyolefins.

The project converts CO2 into other chemical products.

Besides the partnership with USP through the Research Center for Greenhouse Gas Innovation (RCGI), the project also includes participation of the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar).

The innovative research focuses on CO2 conversion through both catalytic and electroncatalytic processes. Electrocatalysis uses electricity to activate catalysts, materials that trigger chemical reactions, rather than the thermal activation in conventional process in chemical industry. As such, renewable energy can be used partially or fully for CO2 conversion.

This partnership contributes to Braskem’s aim to achieve sustainable development targets, especially in reaching carbon neutrality. The company expects to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2030 and attain carbon neutrality by 2050.

The partnered project, which started a year ago, is expected to continue for five years for developments on a laboratory scale, with the possibility of extension based on the progress of research.
